Not Just Another Teen Vampire Show

As someone who doesn’t watch Vampire Diaries regularly, I was a bit sceptic about watching the new show The Originals.  My sister—who doesn’t watch Vampire Diaries either—mentioned that a new show about supernatural beings was going to be starting.  After missing the premiere last week, we thought we wouldn’t be able to give it a shot, but it aired again tonight before Supernatural.  We decided to give it a chance.

As someone who loves anything supernatural, I was excited about the prospect of a new vampire show (though I was worried that it would be cheesy like many other teen ones out there—I’m looking at you Twilight).  I’ve always loved learning about vampires, werewolves, witches and all kinds of other supernatural legends.  When a show can tie in old legends and myths and goes about the lore in a new and interesting way, creators have something golden in their hands.

The Originals is a spin-off of the television show Vampire Diaries, centering around a few main characters.  The world’s original vampires—Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah Mikaelson—are back in New Orleans, each with a different agenda.  The pilot episode was easy enough to follow without having watched the Vampire Diaries, but there were a few things that one might find confusing.  After talking to my sister, we agreed that there are little things that we would either have to look up, or ask a friend.  However, that aside, the show was very interesting and I will definitely be watching again next week.  The characters are very interesting, with Klaus definitely being the most intriguing.  I can’t wait to keep watching and see what happens next.
