Taking a Break from “City of Fallen Angels”

My sister always reads books long before they become popular and get turned into movies.  Whenever my sister reads a book (which is daily), she always tells me about what is happening and not a single detail is spared. However, whenever I get around to reading those books, I’ve forgotten everything she told me.  This makes for an interesting—albeit annoying—experience.  This happened when she first read The Hunger Games series, for instance, though I read through those in about 2.5-3 days.

I started The Mortal Instruments series in the summer before the movie came out.  I love reading, so I have a fairly long list of books that I want to read, but this series got bumped up due to the movie.  After finishing the third book a few weeks ago, I started to read book four, City of Fallen Angels (which I’m going to call CoFA).

At first, I was pretty iffy as I really liked the way the third book ended.  Cassandra Clare did a great job of wrapping up the storylines and I felt that the ending was something believable….and then, she decided to continue the series.

You can usually tell when I’m into a book by how fast I read it.  If I’m really enjoying it, I’ll breeze through it in a couple days (though I do make sure I take time to enjoy it).  If I’m not really that into a book, I tend to put off reading and it takes me a lot longer to get through a book.

I kept trying with CoFA—I really did—but the story was just not intriguing me and I think I know why.  Without giving too much away (though I’m sure most people have already read it), I found that this book took a really long time to get into.  I made it to page 172 before I got so completely bored that I made the decision to take a break from this series.  Also, I found that the storyline isn’t really needed information.  I really don’t care about what’s happening to the characters anymore—which I’m going to chalk up to spending too much time reading the same series.

I’m a little sad because I really enjoy this series and there is so much potential—which is why I am simply taking a break and reading something else.  I’ll eventually go back to CoFA and hopefully it will be easier to get through.

As of right now, I’m reading a book called Antigoddess by Kendare Blake, and I already would recommend it.  Anyways, cheers to all the book lovers out there!

  1. I can’t believe your sister tells you spoilers for books that you might read. If that were my sister, I’d sneak a book that she was dying to read and spoil it massively in revenge!

    1. I usually ask her about the books she’s reading. It doesn’t bother me because I know I’ll usually forget everything she’s told me by the time I get around to reading it. We also read a lot of different books, plus she allows me to tell her about the books I’m reading. It’s like our own mini book club.
