June’s BOTM is: Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini. The first book in the Worldwalker trilogy, Trial by Fire, revolves around the main character, Lily Proctor. Lily has terrible allergies that often pose a serious threat to her life. These life-threatening allergies stop Lily from living like most other teens her age. After getting invited to a high school party by her best (and only) friend, Tristan, Lily decides she wants to experience the normalcy of a high school party and goes. However, after being humiliated at the party in front of her peers, Lily wishes she could disappear.
Somehow, Lily ends up in a different Salem, an alternate universe Salem. It’s like the old saying, “be careful what you wish for”. This world is overrun by horrible creatures and run by witches, known as crucibles. The crucible in charge is Lily’s identical self, Lilian, who rules with an iron fist. While in this other world, Lily finds herself in serious danger.
Trying to navigate this other Salem, Lily finds out that she possesses powers that could help her get home, but first, she needs some proper training. With the help of a few people she meets in this other Salem, Lily starts training to use her powers. She finds herself on an adventure of self-discovery and preservation while trying to find her way home.
I found this book kind of difficult to get through at times, but that could be because the font was incredibly small in the copy I was reading. It was a bit dry and very heavy on the details, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story. As a whole, I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read books two and three.
