#tpt: Dark Matter and Star Trek: Beyond

26 July 2016

Today’s Top Picks

I’m back with two top picks, brought to you by all things space!  Sidenote: as you can probably tell, I really love all things space!

Today I’ll be telling you why I love Dark Matter and Star Trek: Beyond—and why you should love them too!

My first pick is the Canadian sci-fi television show Dark Matter—which conveniently airs back-to-back with my last #tpt, Killjoys.  The show, which first premiered on 12 June 2015, just started its second season this July, so you definitely have time to catch up.  Dark Matter is about a group of six people who wake up on a spaceship in deep space with no memory of who they are or how they got there.  Naming themselves in order of how they woke up, from one to six, the group must stabilize their ship and try to figure out the mystery revolving around their identities.  One, Two, Three, Four, and Six are all adults, with Five being the only teen, which leads to more questions.  The crew also has an android who has a psychic link with the ship, resulting in her being very useful.

Throughout the first series, we start to learn a bit about who each character is and what they were doing on the ship.  Each episode tends to revolve around a certain mission, with most going wrong, that the crew must complete.  Without their memories, however, it becomes difficult for these individuals to trust each other, and therefore successfully complete their missions.

Dark Matter is incredibly interesting and will definitely keep you coming back.  It’s a great space mystery with just enough being uncovered in each episode to leave you with new questions to keep watching for answers.  Without giving too much away, I can tell you that my favourite characters are Four and Five, though I really love that Two is so incredibly badass.  Like with Killjoys, Dark Matter has a kickass female at its helm that takes no crap from anyone and can hold her own with the boys—often being the one to end up saving them!  It’s a great dynamic that I really like to see in the show.  I also really like the Android.  I wasn’t sure how I felt about her at first, but she has really grown on me as the series went on.

If you’re looking for a new show that will definitely keep you coming back, check out Dark Matter and don’t forget to tell me what you think in the comments below!

star-trek-beyond-poster-internationalMy second pick for today is Star Trek: Beyond.  My family went to see this for my mother’s birthday this weekend as it came out on her birthday and my family is obsessed with all things Star Trek.  Let me tell you, I LOVED this movie!  I honestly don’t even know what to say without giving away any spoilers, but I’m going to try my best.

Okay, so this is the third in the reboot of the Star Trek films and occurs three years into the Enterprise’s five year mission.  With a new mission given to the crew of the USS Enterprise, our favourite crew embark on a journey full of action, comedy, and of course, a serious villain who wants to destroy the galaxy…or part of it at least.

In this case, the Enterprise faces off with Krall, an alien commander of a massive swarm of aliens intent on destroying the ship and taking the crew.  Crash landing on a relatively undocumented planet, the crew is separated and must find a way to somehow stop Krall and his secret evil weapon.

Star Trek: Beyond also introduces a new character, Jaylah, who Scotty finds on the planet and makes a deal with.  I really liked Jaylah’s character and enjoyed her interaction with the different crew members.

I found that this film had the perfect amount of comedy and action and was exactly what I was hoping for.  With Simon Pegg as one of the main writers, however, I’m not really surprised with the comedy in the film.  What I found really hard though was any scene with Chekov.  My entire family loves Anton Yelchin—usually referring to him as “Our Oddy”—so it was really hard to see him in the film and know that he’s gone.

RIP Anton <3 We'll miss you Oddy!

If you’re a fan of the first two Star Trek films, my guess is you’ve already seen this one, so let me know what you thought below.

Until next time dreamers, much love.
