This year has been delightfully full of spontaneous adventure and long-awaited events. I’ve had a blast getting to do so many wonderful things that I would like to share some of the bigger events with you all.
I volunteered for Toronto Comicon again this past March. Just like the last few years, I was placed in the Autograph area where celebrities meet and greet fans, sign autographs and sometimes even take selfies.
Every Comicon, there are plenty of celebrities for people to meet. This year, I had the pleasure of meeting three that I love.
Firstly, I had the opportunity to meet Tommy Flanagan from Sons of Anarchy (Chibs). His accent is even more amazing in real life! Next, I met Dan Fogler from the Fantastic Beasts movies.
Lastly, and my favourite of the weekend, was John Rhys Davies, aka, Gimli from Lord of the Rings. Now, if anyone out there knows anything about me, it’s that I am in love with Lord of the Rings (that and Harry Potter are my favourite movies), so this was a huge deal for me. I had the pleasure of working his line on the Sunday, and he made sure to take a picture with me before he left. So sweet!
For Mother’s Day this year, my sister, dad, and I took my mom to see a Toronto Blue Jays game! We all love our team, but my mother is the biggest Jays fan in our house, so we knew this would be perfect.
We took the Go train down to Toronto and had a whole lot of fun at the game. We bought all the traditional baseball game necessities—hot dogs, alcohol, and ice cream served in the plastic Jays hats.
June and July
There isn’t much I can say about June, except that I had an amazing weekend at one of my best friend’s bachelorette party. A small group of my friend’s closest girls went to Niagara for a weekend of fun. We started the weekend with a wine tour followed by drinks at our Airbnb and a night out Saturday and ended it with a relaxing day at the Pillar and Post spa getting massages, lunch, and swimming well into the afternoon.
I don’t have a lot of photos to share, so have a lovely one enjoying the view from our Airbnb.
July mainly consisted of binge-watching Stranger Things 3 in one day, then getting my parents into the show and making them binge-watch all 3 seasons in 3 days. The reason I’m including July is because it led to some fun spontaneous adventures, like the time my sister and I went to Baskin Robbins so I could try the Stranger Things ice cream, USS Butterscotch. The ice cream was incredible, and I even got the exclusive Steve Harrington Pop Vinyl in his Scoops Ahoy uniform!
This is the month in which I have been insanely busy. The month started with the rehearsal dinner for my friend’s wedding, then her actual wedding 2 days later. This was the first wedding (since I was a flower girl at my aunt’s wedding when I was about 8) where I was a part of the bridal party. Being a bridesmaid was a lot of fun and I was deeply honoured to have been asked by my friend to be a part of her big day. It was incredibly beautiful and literally brought me to tears when she walked down the aisle. I’m not going to share any photos from this special event, but just know that it was lovely.
Next up was orientation for Fan Expo Canada on August 11. They always host the orientation a week or two in advance and go over everything we need to know. As I’ve been a volunteer at these events for the last few years, I wasn’t sure if I was going to attend, but a few volunteer friends of mine and I decided to go out for food and drinks after. Just a few days before the orientation, my friend told me she won tickets to a concert that night (Aug 11) and wanted to know if I was interested in attending with her. Naturally, I said yes (I love concerts). So, after orientation and going out for drinks with other volunteers, my friend and I went to see Beck and Cage the Elephant at the Budweiser stage. It was a really fun concert and I’m very glad I was able to go.
Friday August 16 was the opening day for the CNE and tickets were only $10, so my mum, sister and I went for the day. We walked through all the buildings, enjoyed some new treats, and had an overall wonderful day taking in the sights of this year’s CNE. It’s been about 11 years since I last went, and it was a lot of fun going back. We actually plan on attending during the Labour Day weekend too so that our dad can come, and we can watch the air show.
Finally, after so much anticipation, it was Fan Expo Canada weekend. I honestly always have the most fun in my autograph area. I’ve made some great friends through these conventions and I continue to meet new people every year. Plus, it’s always fun talking to the fans. On Saturday, I was working the line for Laura Vandervoort (from Smallville and Bitten, amongst other things), and she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. When she came back from her break, she had brought me water and snacks since we don’t always get breaks when volunteering. She was just so incredibly kind to everyone and I’m so glad I was able to meet her.
On Sunday, I worked the line for Tom Welling (Smallville, Lucifer) and it was a lot of fun. His line was always busy and it was a lot of fun taking photos for fans when they met Tom. I was excited to meet Tom as I absolutely loved him in Lucifer. It was such a fun character to see him play. Meeting Tom Welling was another amazing moment during this con.
Lastly, I was able to talk to Edward James Olmos and tell him how much I love him as Felipe Reyes in Mayans. While I didn’t get a photo, he did sign my volunteer shirt, which is pretty cool too.
Overall, I had an incredible weekend volunteering at Fan Expo and can’t wait to do it all again next year.
That’s all for now!
